All the Art That's Fit to Print (And Some That Wasn't)

The New York Times inaugurated the new op-ed page on September 21, 1970. The editors claimed that "diverse voices of our society must be given the greatest opportunity to be heard" (Op.Ed. 42). The New York Times would publish texts and illustrations in a public forum of inventiveness where artists and writers would spur public debate.

Jerelle Krause worked 30 years at the NYT and 13 as an art director  selecting artists for the op-ed page. In her text All the Art That's Fit to Print (And Some That Wasn't), Krause discusses each decade and includes anecdotes about the artists' lives. Policy students interested the New York Times op-ed page, art, and history will find the text and rejected illustrations thought provoking.
